A Side-Trip to a Charming Mountain Village

From quaint Winnebachseehütte the trail descends in switchbacks to the valley where a waterfall cascades down into the swiftly flowing Winnebach River. The trail continues to descend gently. Look out for strange stone formations which were carved by glaciers. Once you reach the forest the trail drops rather steeply to the houses of Winnebach where you continue on an asphalted road to the charming mountain village of Gries im Sulztal (approx. 1 ¾ hrs.).
Leaving Gries the trail climbs steadily up through Sulztal. Follow the road into the forested valley and up to the beautiful pastures of Vordere Sulztalalm – an ideal place to enjoy a break and a sandwich. The mountain hut commands splendid views of 3500-meter high Schrankogel which you will continue seeing until the end of the hike. After Vordere Sulztalalm the trail starts climbing rather steeply to Hintere Sulztalalm and on to Amberger Hütte, which is tucked away behind a grassy hill. From the hut you enjoy great views of Sulztalferner Glacier.
