A Trail Steeped in History

In Ötz we board Acherkogel gondola for a scenic ride to Hochötz. Pick up the trail opposite the top station and follow the “Knappenweg” and/or “Höhenwanderweg” signs. Follow the unsealed road through meadows down to Kühtaile Alm and on to Balbachalm. At Balbachalm continue along a trail which, after short section through a beautiful pine forest, climbs and then descends moderately until reaching pristine Wörgetal. At the ruins of Obere Issalm - or the information panels at the resting place - you may like to make a short detour into Wörgetal where ore and minerals were mined in past centuries. It’s only a short walk to the reconstructed Miners’ House which is well worth a visit. During the mine’s heydays up 450 miners were digging for pyrite, yellow copper ore and galenite in Wörgetal. Just below the Miners’ House is picturesque Lake Puchersee – a great photo stop! Backtrack to the resting place where you make a right. The trail then climbs and descends for a while and leads past Mittergrathütte down to Mittertal. Continue to the reservoir in Längental and head down to the road below the hydroelectric plant. Dortmunder Hütte is across the road.
