5 cool tips for really hot days in Ötztal

Austria is groaning under a wave of heat bringing record temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. What can you do to stay "cool" under these circumstances? Ötztal offers myriad opportunities to escape the scorching heat. In this blog post we provide five refreshing tips that won't leave you cold for sure. Or maybe yes?

1. Aiming higher and higher

The higher, the more refreshing: Anyone who remembers geography lessons already knows where to go on hot summer days when temperatures are high - conquer the mountains! Ötztal boasts more than 250 peaks higher than three thousand meters plus impressive glacier worlds, deep blue mountain lakes and countless mountain huts and is therefore predestined to get a little closer to the sky. HERE you will find a selection of high Alpine tours suitable for experienced mountaineers. At least one size smaller: the 6 Water Strider Loop Trails that offer the ideal opportunity for families to experience Ötztal's ever-present element up close - Alpine waters. Coupled with wonderfully refreshing moments! Please don't forget: UV radiation is particularly intense in the mountains so take sunscreen and sunglasses with you.

2. Immerse yourself in cool and clear water

Lake Piburger See Oetz

Ultimate fun in the water: If you don't necessarily have to conquer the scenic mountains of Ötztal, you will also find many other diving opportunities on the valley floor. Lake Piburger See in the Oetz holiday region, for example, makes an ideal spot for practicing the crawl. Those who want to enjoy a portion of wellness will find it at the AQUA DOME thermal bath in Längenfeld, while action-packed bathing fun awaits you in Austria's largest outdoor adventure park - AREA 47. All swimming lakes and outdoor or indoor adventure pools within Ötztal can be found HERE.

3. Feel the airstream

Attention to all convertible fans, motorcyclists and pleasure drivers: The trip along the Timmelsjoch high Alpine (toll) road across the 2509 meter high mountain pass of the same name to neighboring South Tyrol is particularly impressive this year. A severe winter has brought huge amounts of snow, ensuring that meter-high snow walls still pile up on the left and right of the cleared road - which are not only spectacular to look at, but also provide truly cooling moments. HERE you will find out more about one of Europe's most beautiful Alpine crossings. HERE you can read more about Europe's highest Motorcycle Museum located directly at the road toll station on the North Tirolean side.

4. Splish-splash adventures

Canyoning in Ötztal

Outdoor activities in Ötztal promise great water fun: Be it river rafting, canyoning and kayaking or canoeing, in Tirol's longest side valley you are very close to wildly romantic and unspoilt nature - thrilling moments already included. It is not for nothing that the Auer Klamm ravine in the Oetz holiday region ranks among Austria's most popular canyoning routes - with natural slides up to 18 meters long and jumps over 10 meters high - if you dare. HERE you can find out more about all outdoor spots plus a full list of outdoor providers.

5. Cool culture spots

If you absolutely don't feel like swimming, can't stand the sun at all or suffered a painful sunburn the day before, a visit to one of the Ötztal Museums is strongly recommended. The partly old buildings with their heavy walls promise pleasant temperatures inside. The Tower Museum in Oetz is closely linked to the biography and collection of the Oetz art lover and art collector Hans Jäger, while the Local Heritage & Outdoor Museum in Längenfeld mainly includes everyday tools and objects, as well as historical work and handicraft equipment. The Nature Park House in Längenfeld covers almost 300 square meters of exhibition space and provides interesting insights into the unique natural variety of Ötztal.

No matter what you choose, we hope that you will keep a cool head on very hot days - by paying a maximum of attention to your health: Please never forget to put sunscreen on and to drink enough when temperatures are high!
