Via Schönwieshütte to Langtalereckhütte

Popular family hike in Gurgl

Even in the middle of the hiking season Gurgler Tal valley is a place of peace and silence. Hikers of all ages enjoy unspoilt nature and picture-book views of the rear valley and its glaciers on the broad gravel trail leading to Schönwieshütte (2266 m), continuing on a narrower path to Langtalereckhütte (2430 m).

Two mountain huts on one hiking day

The leisurely hiking tour starts in Obergurgl below the University Center. Walking past Zirben Alm, the trail continues to a trail fork with bench. You keep to the left, following the rising theme trail and the geocaching route through the resinous stone pine forest. The well-maintained gravel trail runs along the western slope of Hohe Mut, it is slightly to moderately climbing up to Rotmoostal side valley and over a bridge it takes you to Schönwieshütte. The mountain hut at the entrance to Rotmoostal catches the eye with its modern, linear architecture and spoils hungry hikers with homemade treats and delicacies. The peaks of Hangerer (3020 m), Hochfirst (3403 m) and Kirchenkogel (3113 m) are only a few of the 360-degree panorama highlights.

If you are strong enough and walk past the tempting terrace you take the slightly descending trail to Gurgler Alm. Then you continue into the valley, past a small chapel and along the climbing route to the old customs hut. Soon you reach the saddle to Langtalereckhütte (the hut run by the German Alpine Club is also known as Karlsruher Hütte). Its stone-walled facade with shutters in red-white-red promises genuine Alpine hospitality already from a distance - a yearning that is fulfilled by the warm and cozy atmosphere in the quaint parlors and on the sunny terrace.

Langtalereckhütte offers truly spectacular views of the Alpine landscape formed by glaciers and is considered to be the ideal base for hiking adventures, via ferrata tours and high Alpine conquests of the most popular summits on the ridges of Gurgler Kamm and Ramolkamm. From here you can also start the challenging Alpine trek across Schalfkogeljoch to Martin Busch Hütte. On your way back you take again the approx. 7 km long route and return to Gurgl.

Special tip: If you want to save energy take Hohe Mut gondola up to the middle station and reach your first stage destination - Schönwieshütte - even faster.

Ambitious hikers can walk from Langtalereckhütte via the Piccard Bridge up to Ramolhaus (3006 m).
