From the car park at the edge of Gries you follow the road to Winnebach, then turn into the path in the direction of Winnebachseehütte. Leaving behind the wood-covered region, you pass several avalanche-prone areas. The perfectly maintained trail winds its way steeply uphill, on the right hand side you find the rushing "Bachfalle" waters of Winnebach brook. Hiking time: approx. 2 hours. Once reached the hut, you proceed to the lake's run-off area and further on to the terrace located above. Past picture-book glacier polish terrain in eastern direction to the three marvelous mountain lakes. Continue through rock-strewn and grass-covered terrain to the Bachfalleferner glacier snout.

Where the trail branches off you follow the upper part of the route, circling an eyecatching rock column leading towards a secluded side valley. Past the high Alpine cirque you get to gravel and snow-covered fields that take you up to the ridge on a small saddleback. A short downhill trail merges into the upper part of Grüntatzenferner glacier where you cross the basin and proceed to the eastern saddleback and – through a rock-strewn part – to the summit.

The ascent from Gries to the Winnebachsee hut takes about 2 hours. On a flat ground and at the signposted path straight ahead direction Hoher Seeblaskogel steeper upwards, until you reach directly above the glacier lake of the Bachfallenferner's the next signposted junction. Left northwards over scree upwards in a further Kar (well marked) and continue over Blockwerk on the broad northeast ridge, where one sees for the first time in the Längental down. At the broad back still a short northward to a cairn with prayer flags, a few meters steeper downhill into a ridge and at the signboard obliquely downwards on the green paws far (not further on the ridge as in some maps marked!).
