Congresses, conferences, meetings, events: Obergurgl-Hochgurgl not only promotes a sporty, hedonistic way of life but also scientific research and intellectual exchange. The Piccardsaal event hall, run by the local authorities, and the Obergurgl University Center, belonging to Innsbruck's University, are two event centers equipped with all modern amenities available in the small Alpine village.
Named after the Swiss adventurer Auguste Piccard, the Piccardsaal is the center of many tourist and village events throughout the seasons. Designed as an event and conference center, it offers state-of-the-art seminar, stage and sound technology. It can accommodate up to 250 people depending on the seating option. Top-class scientific symposia have been taking place in Obergurgl's Piccardsaal for many decades - such as the Advanced Training for Gynecology & Obstetrics and the Pediatric Advanced Course of the Austrian Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.
The Alpine Research Center, including a national sporting center and a weather station, was founded in the 1950s. In the course of the years, it has developed into Obergurgl's University Center (UZO) which is located at 1940 m above sea level, directly on the ski slope and just five walking minutes from the village center. Biology scientists and experts in the field of geology and atmospheric sciences research here in Obergurgl, appreciating the one-of-a-kind "outdoor laboratory" on the doorstep. The listed UZO building also houses state-of-the-art meeting rooms, the Alpine Research Center, laboratories, sports medicine facilities as well as rooms and a restaurant for researchers and conference participants.
