Description

Dizzyingly high, but secured all around: this is how the adventure of the suspension bridge at the back of the Gurgler Valley can be described. Since summer 2017, the 142 m long bridge has spanned the deep gorge between the two sides of the valley and provides an important connection between the Langtalereckhütte and Ramolhaus. The structure was named after the famous balloonist Auguste Piccard.

Circular hiking trail or hut tour to the Ramolhaus.
The Piccard Bridge is the turning point on a beautiful circular hike from Obergurgl. From the centre of the village, the signposted trail leads to the Gurgler Ache and up over steep grassy slopes, crossing small glacier streams several times, to the Küppelealm at approx. 2,300m. The trail continues into the valley and from afar the Ramolhaus, perched on a rocky outcrop, motivates all those who have set themselves this beautiful goal for the day. Still below the hut, the path branches off to the Piccard Bridge, which leads those with a head for heights safely to the other side of the valley.

The panoramic path on the west side of the valley is not only used as an access to the Ramolhaus, but also as an alternative route to the Langtalereck hut. After a refreshing stop, hikers then return to Obergurgl on the east side of the valley. The round hike is also possible in the opposite direction: first the ascent via the Schönwies to the Langtalereck hut, before the Piccard bridge leads across the valley basin on the way back. For the entire round (without Ramolhaus) you should allow about 6 hours walking time.

Highest point: 2,688 m
Ascent and descent: each 819 m difference in altitude
Refreshment stops: Ramolhaus, Langtalereckhütte, Schönwieshütte, Zirben Alm.

Please note: The suspension bridge is open to hikers from the beginning of July to the end of September. In autumn, the walkway is covered over a length of 30 metres to protect it from avalanches.
