Really big eyes for all winter hikers in the rear Ötztal: the pace is excellent to admire the unspoilt beauty of the Alpine mountains and landscapes. 12 km of cleared, signposted winter walking trails lead through snow-covered stone pine forests, white meadows and along the frozen Gurgler Ache brook. Take an even deeper insight into marvelous backcountry areas on guided snowshoeing adventures.
Sober route descriptions can't capture all these intense impressions on the spot and the high recreational value of winter hiking in Obergurgl-Hochgurgl. Nevertheless, a few tour tips that awaken your desire of unspoilt nature exploration:
The classic must-do on every Obergurgl-Hochgurgl holiday is a leisurely walk on the valley floor of Pill/Angern (starting point: car park of the Hochgurgl mountain gondola, base station) along Gurgler Ache brook up to Obergurgl and Zirben Alm. With every step you will enjoy new perspectives amidst the majestic Alpine surroundings.
The nature trail through the stone pine forest leads from Obergurgl past Zirben Alm to the "Zirbenwald" crossroads. Centuries-old stone pine trees defy the wintry moods of Mother Nature. Return via Zirbenwald bridge, then keep to the left, down towards Imfong trail (walking time: approx. 1 h).
Lovely Schönwieshütte (2270 m) is about 1.5 walking hours above Obergurgl in the foothills of Hangerer summit. A wide cart trail leads from the base station of Hohe Mut Bahn I mountain gondola past the 400 year old stone pine forest up to the private hut (open 9.00 am - 4.00 pm, day off is anounced).
The 1 km long Hochgurgl romantic trail is quite flat, traveling slightly above Hochgurgl's chapel in a scenic round above the tree line towards Königstal. Holding hands is a must as a part of the winter hiking trail is illuminated!
Off the bustling village center you can trudge through snowy no-man's-land, only the sounds of nature in your ear: that's what makes snowshoeing in Obergurgl so special. The local ski schools invite you to try this gentle type of winter sports on "Yeti's tracks" every Wednesday afternoon. The guides decide about the tour's destination at short notice, depending on the current weather and snow conditions. The complete equipment for this approx. 2-hour adventure is of course provided.
